Iconic beach shacks in South Coast’s mid-century gem
NOW SOLD. On the market for only the second time in over 85 years, the historic Currarong Beachfront Cottages are a rare opportunity to buy into the tightly held beachfront in Currarong, arguably the South Coast’s most unspoilt and intact mid-century beach village.
With views right up Currarong Beach and lagoon, the cottages were completely renovated in keeping with the 1930s architectural details with modern conveniences. Their beach backdrop, colourful and eclectic interiors have seen them as a popular location for fashion spreads and featured on the BBC’s Coast Australia television series.
The three cottages are on the one beachfront reserve title and were restored over the past decade by former Sydney-siders, heritage architect Robin Graham and wife, media creative turned board director Catherine Shields.
“People have been coming to Currarong to get away from it all for a century”, says Robin. “When we restored the cottages we very much tried to keep the retro vibes of relaxed holidays spent beachcombing, fishing and surfing.”
Currarong has traditionally been the low-key weekend haunt for locals, but in the past decade has become a favourite for Sydney professionals wanting to fly below the social radar of near-by Jervis Bay hotspots Hyams Beach and Vincentia. With north facing ocean frontage and easy access to the white sand beaches of eastern Jervis Bay, its cover has been somewhat blown by intrepid instagramers hiking to the photogenic Gosang’s Tunnel, Mermaid’s Inlet and Honeymoon Bay.
The tiny village (population 452) maintains a remarkably well kept proliferation of mid-century funky cottages with contemporary architects like Virginia Kerridge now making their mark on new-builds and substantial renovations.
The Currarong Beachfront Cottages come with an established holiday rental following and have solid income potential for when you’re not using them for yourself and extended family. They come fitted out ready to go with management connections and cleaners if required.
